By analysing the CCTV imagery and taking accurate ground measurements we are able to determine the speed of a vehicle. In order to do this FVS determine the distance travelled by the vehicle using a combination of our own measurements and also plotting landmarks on aerial footage and use of scale. We also calculate the time taken to travel that distance using the CCTV frame-rate and time-stamp. From this we are able to determine accurately the speed of travel. Speed assessment in practice  Case Study. Mobile phone footage was  recovered from a fatal Road Traffic Collision  (RTC). During the journey the driver lost  control and hit a tree. From the mobile phone footage we were  able to identify landmarks which were  subsequently compared with aerial imagery  of the area. By comparing the time taken to  travel between two landmarks we were able  to calculate the speed the car was travelling  leading up to the RTC and at the time of  impact. FVS have also utilised CCTV to this effect  when calculating whether a car was  speeding when it struck a pedestrian  crossing the road. From the imagery below  we were able to determine that the car was  travelling at 48mph in a 30mph area.

Case Study - Driver of Bus Walks Free  A man had been charged with causing the death of a female by careless  driving when she was hit by a bus in Hampstead, north London.  However, the judge at Blackfriars Crown Court, after hearing FVS’s  evidence directed a verdict of not guilty.  The bus driver accused of causing the death of a medical student walked  free from court after the case against him was withdrawn.   FVS clearly showed how the police evidence was flawed.   “I thought the FVS representative one of the best experts I have recently seen in the witness box and I have worked in Law since 1982. He was clear, deliberate and explained all scientific ideas simply.  His explanation of jargon was lucid. He took the jury with him and everyone was nodding  throughout his explanations.  He simply knows his subject and its  limitations.”  Chandra Solanki, Solicitor Full story...
