What FVS can offer Enhancement of the audio recording Critical listening to determine authenticity of the audio recording Enhancement of the audio recording We are capable of re-processing audio recordings to bring out additional details. For example, an audio recording with a  distant background track (such as two persons talking at different distances from the microphone) can have the  background track ‘brought forward’ into greater clarity.  Critical listening to determine authenticity This entails analysing digital audio files to determine whether there is a consistent and contiguous time code (i.e. no  parts of the audio recording have been edited out), whether the room tone (background noise) is consistent throughout,  and whether audible and inaudible tones/sine wave traces generated by the particular recording device remain  consistent throughout. Any inconsistencies would indicate that the file has been tampered with.  In the case of analogue audio, we listen critically to the audio file in its entirety. We specifically listen for unfinished  words, abnormal intonation and sentences that lack continuity and conversational flow, audio dropouts across the  recording and examples of badly edited sections. FVS are also able to identify reasons for audio dropout, including:  The copying method from the original exhibit  Badly set up equipment Badly functioning equipment  Examples of work undertaken by FVS in this field include:  Case Study: In 2013, Lincolnshire Police provided a video of a man in custody. Unfortunately the defendant was a  long way from the microphone. The resulting enhancement was such that incriminating words were now audible. He  pleady guilty and received 7 years imprisonment.  Case Study: In Liverpool an audio transcript was pivotal to a case. A dispute arose between counsels over a word that  was heard during a conversation. FVS enhanced the audio and were able to conclusively resolve the dispute.  Case Study: A dispute arose over the substance of a mobile phone conversation. FVS enhanced the audio and  provided an invaluable transcript that greatly assisted the court.
